Q/A: Ed Stradling
We're asking, they're answering.
What's your desert island Doctor Who story?
There are a few candidates but I suppose The Talons of Weng-Chiang.
Who's the best actor that should have played the Doctor?
I'd like to have seen Richard Heffer have a go after Colin Baker. He was my favourite actor in the 80s hence having employed him recently for a few DVD voiceovers.
Who is the sexiest Doctor Who producer?
It has to be a Welsh one so that's a three-way toss-up between Russell, Julie Gardner and ... err ... Innes Lloyd.
Who's the most famous Doctor Who related person you've got in your phone contacts?
I suppose now it would be Steven Moffat.
Ian Levine. Discuss.
He's a friend of mine and I could spend ages saying both very good and very bad things about him, just as I often do to his face. Watching him ordering a curry is usually fun. Unless of course you're the waiter.
Do you have all your Doctor Who DVDs in transmission order on your shelf?
They're not on my shelf any more, there's no room. They're stacked away in a cupboard. When they were on my shelf I had them in release order, not transmission order.
Which single episode would you like to be recovered?
Probably the first episode of Power of the Daleks. It will happen one day.
Which is your favourite regeneration scene?
The Caves of Androzani. Most of them are quite dull but that one really works both in its own right and as a culmination of a really good serial,
Which Doctor Who scene frightened you most as a child?
The Master was the only character in Doctor Who I was frightened of. I remember having nightmares after he revealed himself half way through Time-Flight.
On a scale of nought to ten, how much do you like Katy Manning's DVD commentary contributions?
7. I have to be honest and say I seldom listen to the commentaries. I used to listen to the odd one when I did my own ironing but not since I've had a cleaner do it for me.
Has a Doctor Who story ever made you cry?
Name a Doctor Who story you've never seen.
I've not yet seen The Girl Who Waited, or the last episode with the wedding. I do have them on a hard drive somewhere and will get around to them soon - unlike The Web Planet, which I will never get around to. I've seen the first episode several times but never made it past episode two or three.
Have you ever thought about Doctor Who during sexual intercourse?
Can't be absolutely certain but I'm fairly sure not. You should ask Nev Fountain that one.
What evidence is there in your home that you like Doctor Who?
My office/edit suite is a bit of a giveaway, unsurprisingly. And I have loads of Radio Times framed on my wall, including a few Doctor Who issues.
What percentage of your friends would know what "the Cartmel Masterplan" or "UNIT dating" means?
Probably around 30%.
What are the most embarrassing lengths you have ever gone to in order to ensure you didn't miss an episode of Doctor Who?
I can't think of any. But I do remember having to do some very embarrassing lengths (I was an ungainly swimmer) at Cogan Leisure Centre which made me miss the first quarter of an hour of Vengeance on Varos part 1.
Give us a hint of the most scandalous behind the scenes Doctor Who gossip you know.
You won't hear a whisper, a meeow or even a bow-wow from me on that one.
Ed Stradling, 57, produces many documentaries for the Doctor Who DVD range. He enjoys football, beer and other manly pursuits, though he has an unusually low libido.
