Lucy Liu Cast As Dr Watson
Will it be Joan Watson...?
First Jonny Lee Miller was cast as Sherlock Holmes in Elementary. That we could get our heads around. But now CBS have signed their Dr Watson. And it's only Lucy flipping Liu. (Deep sigh...)
The casting suggests that their modern day, American-set take will be a lot less reverential to Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories than Steven Moffat's and Mark Gatiss's version. While the BBC series and Guy Richie's movies have been keen to play up the bromance aspect of Sherlock and Watson's relationship, casting a hot woman opposite Sherlock suggests they'll be screwing by the time of the season's end.
Sherlock's producer Sue Virtue has been fairly outspoken before now on CBS's plans for Elementary. "We have been in touch with CBS and informed them that we will be looking at their finished pilot very closely for any infringement of our rights," Mrs Moffat said two weeks ago, adding about Miller's casting, "Johnny is a very fine actor, who I saw recently in the theatre when he and Benedict played alternating roles in Frankenstein. Let's hope their pilot script has stayed further away from our Sherlock than their casting choice."
Whether this will be anything like the equal of the BBC series is doubtful, but we can't help being reminded of Sherlock Holmes In Miami, Cruise Of The Gods's imagined version of an updated US-set Holmes. (Shudder)
Robert Doherty (Tru Calling, Medium) will write and executive produce the project, with Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly onboard as executive producers.
