Signourney Joins New Political Drama
Weaver, 62 (!), signs for Political Animals.
Sigourney Weaver - all 5' 11" of her - has signed on for the lead role in the new US drama Political Animals, "a bold and significant look at a fictional first family in turmoil," according to the press release.
Weaver will play divorced former First Lady, Elaine Barrish, now Secretary of State, in the six-episode USA Network drama series. The series focuses on Barrish as she recovers from the dissolution of her marriage and losing the presidential nomination.
"With a philandering ex-husband who is still as much in love with her as the office he once held," USA Network says, "she attempts to keep her family together, while simultaneously dealing with crises of the State Department and a hungry DC journalist bent on destroying her career."
"The provocative drama series will tap into the behind-the-scenes dynamics of a high-profile political dynasty, the dark - yet real - human side of life, and the often-disastrous effects of political ambition," it goes on to say.
The series has been devised by Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark, who previously created the ABC legal dramedy, Eli Stone, together. Berlanti is also working on The CW's Green Arrow pilot.
When Political Animals was first announced in January, USA Network president Chris McCumber cooed, "We're ecstatic to collaborate with Greg and Larry, a writing and producing dream team of this magnitude." Aww.
Political Animals is set to debut in the summer on the USA Network. We imagine Hillary Clinton's lawyers will be watching it very closely...
