ALan Davies and Sheridan Smith star in Jonathon Creek

The BBC will screen a brand new episode of Jonathan Creek this Christmas, British Comedy Guide are reporting.

The Alan Davies-fronted series ran from 1997 to 2004, initially with Caroline Quentin as investigative journalist Maddy Magellan, and later with Julia Sawalha as TV presenter Carla Borrego. The show eventually returned in 2009 and 2010 with two feature length specials, introducing Sheridan Smith as paranormal investigator Joey Ross.

A BBC insider told the website, "It's definitely going ahead, and everyone here is very grateful to David Renwick for bringing back such a loved character for such an important time of year. We're very excited to see Jonathan back on screen with a new mystery to unravel."

The comback special, The Grinning Man, nabbed BBC One 9.91 million viewers when it was shown on New Year's Day, 2009. Its follow-up, The Judas Tree, was down a bit with 6.62 million.

Filming is currently pencilled in for September.
