AMC have released the first picture of the Governor from the currently filming third season of The Walking Dead.

Brit boy, David Morrissey, will make his debut as the villainous Guv (real name Philip Blake) when the new series begins airing later this year.

Talking about the Governor's role in the show, Robert Kirkman - creator of the original Walking Dead graphic novels - said, "Seeing The Walking Dead come to life on AMC has been a real thrill for me, obviously, and moving into season three I'm even more excited than ever, because now I feel like we're really getting to 'the good stuff'.

"Having The Governor in the mix is going to fundamentally change the show in all kinds of awesome and exciting ways. And David Morrissey totally rocks."

Kirkman also insisted that the character - who in the comics is a right bastard, feeding body parts of those that displease him to his zombie niece - won't be toned down for the series.

"The Governor in the show is definitely going to be the Governor in the comic," he told TV Guide. "I think that he's definitely going to be a character that people love to hate and are absolutely entertained by, but also somewhat terrified of.

"He's definitely going to be a very important character and a very nuanced character. We are not going to be watering him down.

"More than any other actor, David Morrissey came in and wanted to embrace everything that there is to the Governor," he said. "He knew this was a complicated character, and he knew this was a character that people are going to hate to love."
